Dennis Helfer (born in Donalda, Alberta) and Elaine Helfer (born in Donalda, Alberta), were his parents. The family's ancestry includes German, English. Swedish as well as Norwegian. She studied at the William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler located in Alberta. The three sisters Tammy, Tara, and Trena were also employed by her on the family farm. Helfer was discovered at age 17 by a scout from a modeling agency while standing in line at the movie theater.
